"Imagine a day when a book swings open on silent hinges

and a place you've never seen before welcomes you home."

Basic Reading Tutoring

Volunteer tutors are available to tutor adults who are reading at or below the 5th grade level. Basic reading students always work one-on-one with a tutor.  Students enrolled in an Adult Basic Education class may meet with their tutor during class time.

Adult Basic Education/GED Training

Volunteer tutors are available to tutor adults who are reading above the 5th grade level and are working toward getting a GED.  ABE/GED students may meet one-on-one or in small groups with a tutor.  Only those adults who are unable to be a part of the ABE/GED classes are admitted to this program.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Volunteer tutors are available to tutor adults who want to learn to speak and/or read English.  These may be adults new to the English language or adults who are already somewhat fluent in English.  ESL students meet one-on-one or in small groups with a tutor.

Agency Partnerships

Tutoring is available for clients of First Step, Migrant Education, Gemeinschaft, Refugee Resettlement, and any other interested agencies.

General Tutoring Information

All tutoring sessions take place once or twice each week at a location convenient to both tutor and student (usually churches, libraries, schools, or other public facilities).  All services are free and confidential.  Materials are provided by Skyline Literacy Coalition.  Students are expected to commit to regular attendance at tutoring sessions and tutors are asked for a one-year commitment to tutoring with Skyline.

Tutor Training Opportunities

Tutor training for volunteers is held in Basic Reading and English as a Second Language (ESL) during the Fall, Spring, and Summer.  These are 18 hour workshops.  Those interested should call Skyline for information and registration.  Training for ABE/GED tutors requires 2 hours of training time and may be scheduled on an individual basis.  Check our calendar for upcoming training dates.
